Ricky Gervais is British, here if someone has a penchant for remebering things well it is sometimes said “they have a memory like an elephant” meaning a great one. The elephant saying he forgot is funny to us

Aww poor elephants. They just wanted a quick dip, went 2 miles out so people wouldn’t see them skinny dipping, to cool off from the hot sun. And what happens? Some prat from the coast guard comes back, shoos them to shore, and steals their beach ball.
