kelly is so very underrated. thanks to the generic pop her label limits her to recording.

at the end of the song when she sings, “coming and gone, coming and gone,” the tone and beauty of her voice just slays me. My hearing has never experienced anything so beautiful.

Kelly Clarkson is my favorite singer of the last decade. Watching the many videos of her on youtube, it really displays her versatility that I hope she will include in future recordings.

Wow, you totally have no clue about music.

Did you fall down and hit your head? Bob Dylan is the worst singer to ever sell a record. Most of the time his lyrics are un-intelligible.

Kelly may not be on Bob Dylan’s level but still she is a great artist.

Anyone who says Kelly isn’t a special or considered one of the best singers is stupid and biased. Even myself who isn’t a fan hers thinks she is one of the best voices ever. You’re right Rudy the album she makes are shit but that’s what her label wants and that’s what sells unfortunately. But I have seen her in many live events where she covered Aretha, and even BB king songs. It seems to me Rudy you’re pigeonholing Kelly and basing it off her albums. That’s stupidity.

@Rudy61287 Thank you. I must admit I’m a little disappointed with the pop songs she sings. But it’s a tough choice. Sometimes a little compromise is necessary. If you want to hear vintage Kelly, I suggest you listen to Irvine, Maybe, Haunted, and her cover of the Black Keys song “Lies”.

@Rudy61287 Please do. And please try to set aside your prejudice so you can truly appreciate this religious, once-in-a-lifetime performance. When Kelly sang “But I hear your sweet voice, coming and gone, coming and gone,” it’s like she has really seen whoever it is that called her up to the mountain. You have no idea how many images this song conjures up in my mind. It’s like a Van Gogh painting – exquisite, fierce, peaceful.

I played her last record multiple times and to me it sounds like little more than WalMart-ized, corporate, semi-musical product – noise. If real music is cheese, then albums like “All I Ever Wanted” are partially hydrogenated cheese product with less than 2% real cheese.

You won’t convince me that Kelly is a special singer. Still, I respect the thought and care you’ve put into your post. You’re more articulate and passionate than most people who try to extoll Kelly’s virtues to me.

I will listen to them side by side. I like your care and attention to the song and the different interpretations.

@Rudy61287 That is so not true. Every great artist in history was once a student of another artist. Granted that Kelly listens to many artists, I find her truly unique. Her voice is rock, blues, soul, folk rolled into one. I didn’t like her back in that pathetic show but listening to her now, I can say that she’s come around and has truly found her voice.

@Rudy61287 I don’t speak English very well but I’ll try to share my insights on Patti, Kelly and Solomon Burke’s renditions. The way I see it, Patti Griffin’s interpretation is full of melancholy and nostalgia while Kelly’s is bold and resolute. Solomon Burke’s version is that of a man well-advanced in age who’s now looking back and reminiscing how he “went up to the mountain.” All three interpretations are definitive and unique, all three of them were soulful and deep with meaning.

I like what you say about her “taking cue” from them because it’s very true and it hits the nail on the head of what I dislike about listening/watching Kelly perform – she is not original. She is a lesser version of talents that have come before. She is playing the part of them. She’s assuming a lot of personas instead of being herself or inventing her own – and they’re all watered-down versions.

I most certainly have heard of them. She may be “taking cue” from them, but she is not living up to their impeccable standards.

I said she overemotes,” by which I meant that her emotional foundation is insincere – it isn’t too much emotion, it is a lack of any *genuine* emotion. I have a friend who is a big Kelly fan and we’ve been having these conversations for 6 years. I even met Kelly to get an autograph for my friend and she was very sweet and personalized the CD “to Gina” – I surprised my friend by getting the autograph on the “Thankful” CD she forced me to buy, insisting I’d love it. I never rebought it.

What I really like about this performance is it feels genuine. Every quirk, every facial expression is organic not forced. Bono, Janis, Louis Armstrong, Kelly – they are all great performers because they understand the songs they’re singing in the visceral level.

    25. Jan, 2010

@Rudy61287 Have you ever heard of Janis Joplin, Louis Armstrong, and Ray Charles? They look like they’re having an orgasm when singing. And Kelly is taking cue from them.

    25. Jan, 2010

@Rudy61287 Er, what? Kelly is apparently showing too much emotion, so her performance isn’t sincere?

    You’re being pretentious.

@Rudy61287 i second skidder’s comment. you dont have any idea what you are talking about

    @Rudy61287 you are.

She overemotes and because of that, to sophisticated ears, this performance does not ring true. Those of you who are impressed seem to be of the idea that over the top emotional display is enough to make a performance great, yet it doesn’t seem like you’re looking for – or even thinking about – something being genuine. It’s hard to believe Kelly, even when her voice sounds pleasant to listen to, and here it does. Chances are I’m wasting my breath trying to explain this.
